Regional Youth Secretary Report to Wales & The Marches Regional Committee 23rd September 2009

My main focus at present, and for the last few months, is this year’s National Youth Education Event, which is being held in the Barcelo Angel Hotel, Cardiff between 16th & 18th October.

I hope that every Branch will consider sending at least one delegate if not more to the event, as this is the first time the NYEE has come to the region, and we need to make a good showing.

The cost to Branches is £250 per delegate, which includes the hotel and all meals for the weekend. There is a day delegate rate of £35 per person. If Branches have already submitted applications for delegates, can they please provide me with the names of their delegates and contact details? I will be contacting Branches in the next few days to chase names for the event.

Traditionally, the Region hosting the NYEE has contributed towards the event in the form of sponsorship. I hope that our region will not be the first to break tradition J

Long term, I hope that if enough delegates from the region attend the NYEE, we can begin to engage with our young members, and form the basis of the Wales & The Marches Regional Youth Committee (RYC). Working closely with Sarah Connolly to organise young members and activists, our current aim is to hold the first ever RYC AGM by the end of January 2010.

Both Geraint Cooper and I have successfully been re-elected to the YAC as representatives for Wales, and I have been elected as this year’s Vice Chair.

Both Sarah Connolly and I continue to work with the Wales TUC to develop links with other young trade union activists. To date there have been a number of forums, which have been fairly well attended; the CWU is the only union to have been present at all forums to date. I’m currently the Chair of the Wales TUC Youth forum, however, the future of the forum is questionable given that the Wales TUC have not renewed the contract of their youth project worker Rob Goddard.

We now have a Wales & The Marches Regional Youth group on the Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=75391156510&ref=ts). I would ask Branches if they could promote the group on their Branch websites, and if the group can be featured on the Regional website.

Likewise, the YAC have launched the CWU’s bespoke youth website, www.cwu.org. The site is live, and is receiving its grand launch at the NYEE. Again, I’d ask Branches to promote the site to their young members. The site features news and events, blogs, photo sharing, and access to youth bespoke resources such as the Branch Youth Officer Toolkit.
